Manole, as he stood on the roof, called out boastfully that this
work was only an apprenticeship and that the next monastery he built
would be far more beautiful. The Prince feared that someone else
would order a monastery and that Manole would build it more
beautifully. Prince Basarab decided that this triumph was to be the
last one of Manole's career.
While the men were high up on the
building putting finishing touches to the roof, they noticed that
the soldiers who had accompanied the Prince were taking away the
ladders and the scaffolds.
